Giving Up Your Pet

The Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA takes pets from owners who live in Charlottesville or Albemarle County by appointment only. This ensures that you are given the time and attention you deserve and we have the space and accommodations your pet deserves. To make an appointment please contact our admissions department at 973-5959 ext. 225.

We ask that you consider every other alternative before you turn you pet into a shelter. Have you asked all your friends and family if they might be interested in taking on your pet, if you have a behavior issue can you work with a trainer or take classes to fix the problem? Pets are a lifetime commitment and your pet depends on you to ensure that they are happy, healthy and loved.

Please bring with you to your appointment:

• All veterinary records
• Your Drivers License
• Any medications you pet is taking
• Any special toys, beds or other belongings from home
• Your continuing care fee.

$50 – For litters of puppies/kittens and adult pets not spayed or neutered or up to date on basic shots.

$30 – for adult pets who are spayed or neutered and have all the basic shots.

The Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA receives most of it’s funding through private donations. The continuing care fee does not cover all our costs to take on the responsibility of your pet but we feel it is an important service to provide the community.

When you arrive:
• We will test your cat for Feline Aids and Leukemia or we will test your dog over 4 months of age for heartworms.

• An appointment does not guarantee we will be able to take your pet if we find there is a major medical or behavioral issue.
